THE DODECANESE (12 ISLANDS)
Consisting
of over 163 islands and islets, the
Dodecanese lie in a curved chain down Turkish Coast
towards the island
of Crete at the eastern
most point of Greece. Please keep in mind that you should only expect to visit
only a small fraction of the island group on your Turkish Holidays in 2008 - 2009, for they are miles apart from each other.
Unless of course you wish to plan a longer Turkish
Holiday and see as many as you can and enjoy a different corner of the
Aegean paradise each day. The islands, of
which only 26 are inhabited, are mostly barren and several of them have
natural springs, little creeks and are green and have lush forests when
compared to the others. Dodecanese is an
extremely popular attraction for Turkish
Chartered Cruises and every year Turkish Yacht Cruises from Turkish Coast drop anchor on the coasts
of the islands to enjoy the warm sun, the clean sea and the healthy climate.
Plenty of opportunities to swim enjoy water sports, fishing, shopping and visit
ancient sites. Every island of the Dodecanese, which is the furthest
archipelago from the mainland Greece,
will be an unforgettable, individual experience. Most famous of the Dodecanese
are Rhodes, Kos, Symi, and Kalymnos. Kassos, Leros,
Tilos, Patmos, Astipalea, Karpathos, Nisyros
and Kastelloriso are off the beaten track and smaller in terms of tourist
attraction. All of these islands have a distinct character and architecture. This
of course makes them a different kind of attraction for the Turkish Yachting in their own right. Almost all of the islands have classical
remains, castles and traditional fishing villages. The Dodecanese
have been inhabited since the prehistoric period and were first ruled by the
Minoans and then the Achaeans as well as the Ottomans. A mix of Oriental and
European culture is evident everywhere on the island group. Holiday
makers sailing on Traditional Gulet
Charters have the choice to spend their holidays either in a cosmopolitan
environment or on a quiet shore. Rhodes, the beautiful island of
roses, is the
largest of the island group and has two large ports. A crossroads of peoples
and civilizations and crown of the island group, a wealthy Rhodes ruled the Aegean at one time. It is by far the most touristy of them
all and attracts thousands of holiday makers each year to its sandy beaches,
inlets and unspoiled villages nestled in the foothills. The fortifications are
fine examples of medieval architecture. In short, the
diverse topography that can be found in the Dodecanese
is charming for all self indulgent holiday makers. Kalymnos
is along the Turkish coast, Leros
being on the North and Kos on South. Much of Kalymnos
is barren but still it a colorful
island, famed for its sponge divers. Kalymnos is one of the still
unexplored islands and you will have the chance to swim in some of the most
attractive beaches of the island, like Arginonta, Myrties, Akti, Agios
Nikolaos, and many other small inlet beaches and isolated coves when you take a
Turkey Crewed Charter Cruise. Located
on the south end of the Dodecanese crescent, Symi is a small island and the interior
of the island is a forested plateau with spectacular views. Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates, is an island of typical Aegean beauty with endless beaches and
over two thousand years history and is the third largest of the group,
which is closer to Turkish Coast
in Bodrum. Visitors will find that
it is a very beautiful and attractive island with quiet nooks, appealing
mountainous villages, an excellent touristy infrastructure,
verdant landscape, abundant ground water and superb beaches of various sizes
and colors. Karpathos Island
is the third largest of the Dodecanese complex
and possesses, like all of the Aegean
islands, magnificent natural beauties to be discovered. Kassos is just 27n.m. northeast of the
coasts of Crete and is the southern most island in the Dodecanese. Simi is a charming little island with
deserted beaches and picturesque mountains. It lies at 21 nautical miles from Rhodes. The population of about 2500 is mostly fisherman.
According to the myths, Simi was the birthplace of the Three Graces. The
island of Tilos
is a true escape from the world and has marvelous virgin nature with sandy
beaches, springs and streams. Patmos
is considered a holy island and is often known as “The Jerusalem of
the Aegean”. This small and typical Aegean
attraction has many things to offer such as beautiful tranquil coasts, wonderful
golden sand beaches with crystal clear waters, where your Turkish Cruise Holiday will be adorned with the images of charming
traditional villages and whitewashed cubic houses. Astipalea, famous for its rich fisheries is the
western most of the Dodecanese islands and is close to the Cyclades. |
